He Ara Taituarā Fund – Māori Initiatives Fund

He Ara Taituarā Fund supports initiatives that build tangata whenua capability and capacity to participate in Council decision-making processes and operations.

He Ara Taituarā Fund was established as part of the Long Term Plan 2024-2034 and is designed to support a broad range of medium to large capacity and capability initiatives/projects.

Council is committed to enhancing Māori capacity and capability in its decision-making processes and operations. This commitment is reflected in Council’s community outcome, Te Ara Poutama – The Pursuit of Excellence. He Ara Taituarā Fund supports Council to deliver on the goals of Te Ara Poutama.

What you need to know

  • A total contestable fund pool of $150,000
  • Who: Iwi, hapū and Māori land trusts with land interests within the Bay of Plenty Regional Council boundaries.
  • When: Applications are open now until Monday 6 April 2026 at 4pm

What can the fund be used for

What we can fund:

There is a total contestable fund of $150,000 for successful projects. The funding period runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

This could include initiatives such as:

  • Building capability and capacity of rangatahi in areas of governance, kaitiakitanga, climate change, legislation, and Council processes.
  • Upskilling and supporting rangatahi as taiao advisors in Resource Management including leading or participating in iwi specific projects.
  • An investigation into the viability and operation of a collective iwi taiao hub.
  • The development of a Resource Management system to support consents processing and other taiao related mahi.
