Tauranga public transport operations facility

As part of the Tauranga Public Transport Operations Facility project, stormwater works will take place on Spring Street between Durham Street and Waihirere Lane from Monday 11 August 2025. 

A new 300mm stormwater pipe will be installed beneath the road to support drainage for the new facility. Work is expected to take around three days, weather permitting. 

Work hours are 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 4pm on Saturdays. No work is planned on Sundays or public holidays. 

Traffic and access changes:

• Alternating lane closures will be in place on Spring Street between 7am and 6pm. 
• A 30km/h speed limit will apply. 
• Vehicles will not be able to turn from Durham Street onto Spring Street while works are underway. 
• Some roadside parking may be temporarily unavailable. 
• Pedestrian access will be maintained where possible. 

There may be short periods when access to nearby properties is restricted. The construction team will keep affected businesses and residents informed and work closely with them to minimise disruption. 

We appreciate your patience while this work takes place. It forms part of a wider effort to improve public transport operations in Tauranga’s city centre and reduce the number of buses parking on busy streets.

Construction on the Tauranga Public Transport Operations Facility will begin on Monday 26 May 2025.

You may notice site setup and activity around the corner of Spring Street and Durham Street, where our contractor, Camex Civil, will be based.

Work is scheduled to continue through to September 2025, taking place from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 4pm on Saturdays. No work is planned on Sundays or public holidays.

Pedestrian access around the site will be maintained where possible, though brief restrictions may be required during some phases.

A short-term road closure on Spring Street is planned for August to allow for stormwater installation. We’ll provide more detail closer to the time.

We appreciate your patience while the facility is delivered. The project forms part of a broader effort to improve public transport operations and reduce on-street bus congestion in the city centre, in coordination with Tauranga City Council’s bus stop upgrades nearby.
