Aquaculture Management Areas - Coastal Use and Values Maps (2006)
The 2006 Coastal Use and Values Maps provide a comprehensive spatial record of existing activities, environmental features, and cultural values across the Bay of Plenty coastal area to inform the planning and location of Aquaculture Management Areas (AMAs). These maps are intended to ensure that any new marine farming (aquaculture) proposals—such as mussel, oyster, or salmon farms—are sited with full awareness of navigational routes, ecological sensitivities, cultural sites, and other marine uses.
Key points
- Purpose: To guide the development of Aquaculture Management Areas by illustrating where existing uses or values may affect, or be affected by, new aquaculture.
- What is Aquaculture? Also known as marine farming, it involves cultivating aquatic plants and animals for commercial production. In New Zealand, mussels, oysters, and salmon are the primary farmed species.
- Aquaculture Management Areas (AMAs): Legally defined marine zones within which aquaculture activities can be established; highlighted on these maps.
- Data Sources & Consultation: Compiled from the New Zealand Coastguard, Ministry for Primary Industries, Department of Conservation, and extensive hui with Māori; publicly notified and refined through feedback.
These finalised maps form the foundation for balanced, transparent decision-making around where and how aquaculture can sustainably coexist with other coastal uses and values.
